#NotInMyCity: Improving Human Trafficking Data & Reporting in Alberta

In this Meetup, we introduce #NotInMyCity, our upcoming partner project with PolicyWise. This project aims to Improve the reporting of human trafficking data in Alberta.

Although human trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada, the data used to report and track the issue is limited to officially reported crimes. Criminally reported human trafficking excludes victims who have not, or will not, report incidents to police and are under the care of community agencies.

Official statistics also do not include those incidents under investigation, in the judicial process, incidents where human trafficking charges are dropped for more easily convicted crimes, or where the human trafficking charges are not the most severe charges for that file.

Due to the hidden nature of the crime, data from multiple sources is required to understand the issue better.

#NotInMyCity aims to tell a more complete story of human trafficking in Alberta by generating a prototype that will bring data together from both police and community services. The project will also create a roadmap for further development of data sharing and data analytics that can contribute to prevention of human trafficking, protection and support of victims, and prosecution of offenders.
