Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon has publicly apologized for her controversial anti-Jewish remarks made during a pro-Palestinian rally in NYC last month. Speaking at Union Square on November 17, Sarandon characterized Jews as “getting a taste of what it is like to be Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence.” She expressed that her intention was to voice concerns about the increase in hate crimes but acknowledged that her choice of words was a “terrible mistake.”

In an Instagram post, Sarandon clarified that her phrasing wrongly implied that Jews had been strangers to persecution until recently, when historical realities show the opposite. She highlighted the long history of discrimination and violence against Jews, citing examples from centuries of oppression in Europe to the recent Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh.

Sarandon, who claimed she hadn’t planned on speaking at the rally, emphasized that she was there with a diverse group of activists to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and advocate for a cease-fire. She expressed deep regret for “diminishing the reality” and hurting people with her comments.

The backlash resulted in Sarandon being dropped by top Hollywood agency UTA, her representative since 2014. The agency reportedly cut ties after several staffers were “extremely hurt” by her remarks. Sarandon’s apology on Instagram marked her first post since November 20, as she had previously used the platform primarily to highlight pro-Palestinian protests. Despite the controversy, Sarandon affirmed her commitment to peace, truth, justice, and compassion, expressing hope for engaging in dialogue, especially with those holding differing views.
