Jawad Mazen Fawwaz, a 19-year-old man from British Columbia, has been criminally charged for intentionally driving his car into Burrard Inlet in March. The incident took place at Rocky Point Park on March 4, where Fawwaz allegedly drove his vehicle into the waters and jumped out before it submerged. Port Moody police revealed that a popular livestreamer paid him to carry out this stunt, resulting in charges of mischief under $5,000 against Fawwaz. Const. Sam Zacharias mentioned that the livestreamer offered compensation for the dangerous act, which caused significant costs to the city for cleanup and possible environmental damage assessments by Environment Canada.
City crews had to retrieve the car from the water the following morning, utilizing containment booms to limit potential environmental hazards. Zacharias noted that the cleanup operation incurred substantial costs for the city, prompting concerns from the community. Lawyer Ravi Hira, K.C., who is not involved in the case, warned about the long-term implications for Fawwaz if he is found guilty. A criminal record resulting from the conviction of mischief under $5,000 could lead to a two-year jail sentence or a $5,000 fine. Additionally, it could impact Fawwaz’s ability to enter the United States and affect his employment prospects in certain fields like security, education, or professional services.
Hira emphasized the seriousness of carrying a criminal record, mentioning potential challenges at border crossings and the need for waivers to enter the United States. Furthermore, disclosing a criminal record could hinder opportunities for specific job roles, such as those involving children, teaching, or certain professions like law or accounting. The Crown may also seek to recover any financial compensation Fawwaz received for the stunt, while his vehicle insurance would likely be void if convicted. Zacharias cautioned young individuals against seeking online fame at the expense of their future, citing the risks associated with social media and impulsive decisions. He urged others to consider the consequences of their actions, using Fawwaz’s case as a cautionary tale for those tempted by fleeting moments of online attention.
Looking ahead, Fawwaz is scheduled to appear in court next week to address the charges against him. The incident serves as a reminder of the perils of social media and the potential consequences of chasing temporary fame through risky behavior. Zacharias urged individuals in similar situations to reflect on the repercussions of their actions before engaging in dangerous stunts for the sake of online recognition. As the legal process unfolds, Fawwaz will have to navigate the legal implications of his actions and the impact they may have on his future prospects. The case highlights the importance of responsible behavior and decision-making, especially in the age of social media where actions can have lasting consequences on individuals’ lives and livelihoods.
