Tracking stolen cars: How they could end up in West Africa (Marketplace)

CORRECTION ON APRIL 28, 2022: The original broadcast of this story on March 25, 2022 showed a brief visual of Banix Motors, a car dealership in Lagos, Nigeria. The visual was inadvertently used in a segment that discusses how some stolen vehicles from Canada are being resold overseas. That visual has since been removed. Banix Motors have indicated that they have never been associated with the sale of stolen vehicles from Canada and CBC never intended to associate Banix Motors with our investigation.

Cars stolen from driveways and shopping malls in Canada are ending up overseas. Some of the most-stolen vehicles include the Honda CR-V, Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX and Ford F-150. Marketplace has found stolen Canadian vehicles in West Africa. Highly organized criminal gangs are using the proceeds to fund and commit other crimes. We show how quick and easy it is for thieves to make off with vehicles using inexpensive tools that are readily available and ask why carmakers aren’t doing more to enhance security.

We need Canadian government to step up to stop this madness of car theft here and heavy jail sentences for criminals.

Wow, a CBC YouTube video we are allowed to comment on.A rare occurrence. If Canada wants to drastically reduce vehicle theft here are some suggestions:
-Stop the current Liberal policy of catch and release. Career thieves are caught one day and out on bail the next day or with a good lawyer out in hours. They are placed on "house arrest". They just continue to steal vehicles. They are also getting more bold. They are armed with guns /knives and just smash into people's front doors and demand the car keys. Carjacking is increasing, at gunpoint.
    – Vehicles are then shipped out by container ships to various parts of the world. If we had special state-of-the-art ray equipment at those ports containers could be quickly scanned. Opened and the vehicles recovered before going out to sea.
-Since 2015 vehicle thefts have increased by 34%. Just in 2022 car theft cost insurance companies $1 billion. What do you think will do with your car insurance rates?
-The Trudeau Liberals could take action but say they are "thinking about it". I guess Captain Climate Crisis is too busy on things like increasing the carbon tax on Canadians.

Als u de daders onzichtbaar maakt, dan vindt u het helemaal niet zo erg dat ze gestolen zijn. Het interesseert u niets, u bent het er mee eens.

I dont know how people make an open car ports in front of their houses. You should make a close garage that can be closed with secure doors

  • @thomasvideoa June 29, 2024

Typical government run broadcasting-CBC: Of course a Canadian would blame the manufacturer, a socialist mindset, rather than exercising personal responsibility, whatever that may look like.

  • @adventuressagas June 29, 2024

In Africa we install cutout switches in secret location that helps alot.

There’s a very simple solution, The UN tells these Countries to sort out the problem immediately or have massive trade embargoes slapped on them.

They stop innocents because too easy but they leave criminals just like this . We need a better system. Canada is worst these days. Cops have no power for anything . Custom border petrol let thieves run away

  • @evelynn4273 June 29, 2024

Nice. The one time the police investigate and stop auto theft they got it on camera.

  • @Oops-Ops June 29, 2024

Those in positions of authority: If you are unable to uphold law and order, please consider stepping down.

  • @Oops-Ops June 29, 2024

The solution to the problem of car theft could be achieved by implementing a complete ban on the export of used cars. It's perplexing to me how stolen vehicles manage to be exported. Exporting typically involves a shipping agent, and it's the agent's responsibility to verify and confirm the proper documentation of the vehicle. Only if everything is in order, the agent arranges the shipment. There likely exists a network, possibly involving organized crime, engaged in this illicit business.

Well when EV's take over most of these countries do not have the infrastructure to support EV's…
